Planned Activities

A & S Competition

Have you heard the latest rumour out of Montengarde? Apparently the snow DOES actually melt there! And you know what those kooky Minotaurs do when the ice finally melts off their horns right? They drop trow and run amok!

That's right, you heard it first HERE! Montengarde is gearing up (or down) for Beltane! So your friendly event stewards/a&s champion and officer of Montengarde will be holding an Arts & Sciences prize competition. Documentation is optional (but underwear is not!) We will be looking up those tunics and down those bodices to see what you have on underneath. In the grand Germanic traditions, we will also be providing the necessary tools to race your friends in nothing but your braies!

If you aren't comfortable with a couple of ladies looking down your pluderhosen, bring something else spring themed to enter. Again, written documentation is not needed, but be prepared to explain your entry!

So, come on down to the fields of the Minotaur and join us in festivities and frolicking under the Avacalian Sun.

Further event details will follow.

Yours in Service,
Caterina d'Alessandro Franceschi da Firenze
Adelheid Holtzfallerin

Bardic Championship

Bjar the Blue, current Bardic Champion, writes:

Bards of tradition were not limited to song and stories. Some delighted with dexterous acts of juggling and tumbling; others bantered and jested with the wisdom allowed only a fool. We should not forget that bards spoke the lore and tradition of the people and kept alive our connection with those who have gone before. Should this sound daunting, then let those who would be the Wild Rose be reminded that Her Excellency Wilma encourages us to challenge ourselves to new endeavours outside our familiarity. Champions are there to nurture and cultivate the seeds of talent in others, helping them find the courage and space to flourish. If we do not take risks, how will we help others to?

With all this in mind, this Beltaine we invite Montengarde to show off their talents with the theme of Variety! Entrants are requested to have two pieces ready to perform and one written piece suitable for publication in the Mouthpiece. It is strongly encouraged to keep the presentation time reasonable or risk the Wrath of the Staff. Advance notice of the approximate length of the presentation is extremely appreicated. The nature of the written piece can range from story (traditional, SCA, period-oid pun, etc.) to instructional or even historical. This is an inclusional challenge welcoming the wide spread experiences of the many to be shared. At their Excellencies discretion, a follow up interview may be requested.

As time and number of challengers permits, others are welcome to perform on the main stage as well as by the eric side. Montengarde enjoys a long standing tradition of battling bards including how Halfdane stopped Clinton War with a Song and the Wild Rose who fast talked his way into a martial Tourney of Champions. Any disputes will be settled with a best of three rock/paper/scissors.

Proposed set up
Opening the Bardic Lists
Invocation of the Bards
words are said, oaths are sworn, a little song and dance as needed
Performers begin
A brief intermission
Performers resume
(deliberation, feasting, drinking, etc)
Passing on of Regalia and swearing in New Champion
(more drinking, more celebrating)

Other activities

For those of you not inclined to the performing arts, we have planned several other tournaments in which you can test your skill in arts either martial or scientific against those of your friends and rivals, and I understand that there may also be underwear races, in the classic German Renaissance tradition. The format of the Heavy, Rapier, and Archery tournaments (and the underwear races) remains to be announced. If you wish to enter the arts and sciences competition, I encourage you to submit either period underwear, or something spring-themed. If you don't wish to prepare written documentation, you can also choose to do a brief presentation of your item to your judges.
