The next big things (driving times approximate)
Who we are: The Barony of Montengarde (located in Calgary, AB) is a member of the international Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc (or SCA), an international non-profit education organization dedicated to researching and recreating the customs, combat and courtesy of the Middle Ages.
What we do: The Known World Handbook says it best:
"Members of the Society strive to recapture the ambiance of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This requires research into such topics as dress, weaponry, armor, jewelry, food; in other words, any facet of life as it was lived. Authenticity is encouraged insofar as modern views on health and safety permit, and members put their research into practice by constructing replica artifacts, practising historical arts and crafts, learning to fight with sword and shield, and so on. But more than research and practice, the Society also attempts to embody the ideals of the medieval romances: chivalry, courtesy, honor, and graciousness. This is re-creating the Middle Ages as they might have been, adding a note of consideration for others in an often too-indifferent world." (Known World Handbook, 1992, page 2)
Where and when: Members get together in various public and private locales both within Calgary and in other cities for practices (martial, dance, arts & sciences, etc.), demonstrations, taverns, feasts, and tournaments. Practices are usually held on a weekly basis, and other activites happen monthly as interest level demands. Please see the events calendar for details.
How: Learning and research are self-directed. Opportunities exist for formal classes as well as hands-on learning. The option to travel in order to meet other people and further exchange ideas is also available.
Why: There is something for everyone and it's a lot of fun!
