Viking Shield by Thorgeir Ingvarsson Dragonslayer 2011 Normally made of poplar, but to withstand the rigors of "living history" combat this one is made of birch plywood to period dimensions of 3/8" thick and 88 cm across. This is based upon found artifacts. This will be rimmed with leather to complete. Iron nails will be holding the leather rim. Copper rivets to hold the handle and roofing nails for the center boss (materials chosen for coordinating colours to stained wood and metal boss). Vikings usually carried three of them into battle in anticipation of breakage. Handles and metal center boss would be recovered and reused. Designed with an "elbow to elbow" standard in mind for living history combat. Used scroll saw and carpenter's scribe for mass production of shield. |

Bog Coat by Grioffa Stoneheart Dragonslayer 2011 As a method of keeping warm on the cold Scandinavian nights, bog coats were very helpful. Two thick layers of wool were sewn together with cotton thread. Being as how I sewed this one completely by hand, it is as close to period as I could make it. The only closer I could get is to use period shears to cut the material and a handmade bone needle to sew it. I learned to make it by taking a second hand dress that was miles too big, cutting it down, and lining it with black melton makes a good coat. I didn"t make the pin, but it needed one. |

Rattan Sword Frog by Donnan Sionnoch Used for holding a rattan sword on the belt; made of leather, dye, rivets, leather stamp; next time will have better experience at applying the stamps and will use more coats of dye; it was exciting to learn how to dye and stamp the leather; the inspiration was coming across an E Bay listing for a similar project and thought "Hey I could do this".

Arrows by Timothy the focused of the four Hills of Sherwood Feather profiles are based on English. The feather wrappings are silk. I used hide glue under and over the wraps. The feather colors and dragons are my idea. Bright arrows are easier to find in the grass and it makes sense to me that rich gentles would pay to decorate their arrows. The dragons are influnced by Chinese ones. Some of the shafts are poplar, others are cedar. Dragons take an hour to do and the rest of the work adds another hour. |

Hauberk (maille shirt) by Timothy the focused of the four Hills of Sherwood This took just over one hundred hours of labor despite having bought the rings already made. I might have made the rings but had no local source for the wire at the time. The cross on/in the chest was made from stripped electrical wire as are the copper wrist pieces. The silver links are steel. The green cloths are linen napkins to help with contrast in the photo. The black handled plyers on the hauberk are what I used to bend the over 12,000 links together.
