An event online presents different challenges from one in person. These simple-to-sew (yes, even for beginners!) men’s hats were common in the 14th and 15th centuries in western Europe. A bag hat can be rolled or folded in various ways to create different looks. Adapt your cotehardie pattern to create a Trossfrau dress. The dresses worn by Landsknecht ladies are stylish, practical, comfortable and just plain fun. They are also a lot more approachable than many 16th century garments because of their simplicity. The class will cover a brief introduction to the German Minnesingers of the 12th to 14th centuries. It will introduce the Minnesang genre (lyric and epic courtly love poetry). and some of the more well known Minnes\u00e4nger such as Walther von der Vogelweide, Hartmann von Aue and Wolfram von Eschenbach. The class will introduce some of their poetry in modern English translation, with some comparisons with versions in modern German, transcriptions of the original Middle High German, and look at originals from scans of primary sources such as the Codex Manasse. We will also listen to one or two examples of pieces sung to period tunes associated with those texts.

Greetings Ladies and Lords,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The snow has fallen, and the harvest is almost complete. Samhain is just around the corner. The physical event is cancelled, so it will be held online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The A&S tournament theme will be the classic \u201cWhat you did during quarantine\u201d: any A&S type projects you worked on over the last eight or nine months. If you didn\u2019t work on anything A&S but would still like to participate, tell me about something you worked on and how it would\u2019ve been done in medieval times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since there\u2019s no physical location to display your projects, submissions will be online. Take lots of pictures and have a write up describing your project, how it went, what you learned, and what you would do differently next time. The deadline will be the Sunday of the original weekend of Samhain, November 8, 2020. Please send entries to champion-as [at] montengarde [dot] org. RULES:<\/em>
1) On the day of I will post a Chopped-style list of mandatory mystery materials that you must incorporate into your Parrying Device in some way. This will be posted to the Samhain Facebook event page<\/a>.
2) All entries must be built new for the competition.
3) All Parrying Devices must meet standards set out in the Avacal Book of Rapier section 2.4 (page 13), found in the link below.
4) The Parrying Device must be something that you you would have brought with you to a tavern\/pub, or that you would likely find if a brawl erupted.
5) All submissions must be received by 4pm MST (UTC-6) on Sunday, November 8th (allowing plenty of time for building and acquiring materials). Winner(s) will be announced that evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCORING:<\/em>
Points will be awarded for creativity, incorporation of the mystery materials, functionality, and fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
