From our Bardic Champion

Bards of the lands of Montengarde, come one and all and hear the words of your Champion! The seasons turn and the time will soon be upon us to select my successor. At Montengarde’s Samhain, upon the evening of November 4th, we shall hold our Bardic Championship! Alongside the Championship we shall host a prize competition for those who do not wish to vie; details will be posted separately at a slightly later date. The Bardic Championship: Those vying shall prepare two pieces to perform. One should be of historical nature, the other performer’s choice. Bonus points for at least one of these pieces complying with the theme of the night: Celebrating SCA culture! Of course please provide documentation of your pieces, and bring a few physical copies for our judges. The winner shall be selected at the counsel of a team of judges. We ask that you please contact and announce your intent to vie prior to the event at champion-bard@montengarde.org before Tuesday October 31 2023. FAQ included below. For any other questions or clarifications please contact Tino, current bardic champion.

FAQ:

-Who can vie for the championship? Participants from Montengarde as well as the shires and King’s land surrounding Montengarde are welcome and encouraged to vie in the championship.

-What is happening with Samhain? In the possible case of disruption to the planned Samhain event, we shall instead hold this championship at Montengarde Twelfth Night, in early January 2024. Any changes will be announced.

-What are the parameters for a piece to be ‘historical’ in nature? Our time period spans up to 1600. If provided documentation makes a good case for a piece being recorded later having originated from this period, (example. A piece passed down through oral tradition and first recorded in 1789, with reasonable evidence of having been first circulated circa 1500, is considered historical.
ADDITIONALLY:
In keeping with the theme, I am willing to accept a piece which has historical cultural significance within the SCA itself, regardless of “periodness”, as arguably “historical” for the purpose of this competition.

-What do you mean by ‘SCA culture’? The SCA itself is a rich trove of legacy and heritage and there are many songs, stories and performances that have left their mark on us as a Society and as a Kingdom, many written by, for, and within the SCA. If you are up to the challenge of this theme, you will need to research and seek out knowledge of our own history through whatever means you can. I guarantee, there are resources available should you seek them out.

A Staple Garb Accessory – The Two-Piece Unlined Linen Coif

Presented by Lady Jocelyn of Montengarde

Do you have too much sweat pooling in your helm? Has your fight coif seen better days and you need a new one? Would you like to protect yourself from the sun, AND rock a swanky and practical head covering?
– a class for heavy fighters and beginner sewers, by Lady Jocelyn of Montengarde (max. 5 students)
Goal: Make an unlined two-piece Jorvic cap style (peaked) or a rounded two-piece coif (the one you see
in pretty much every painting from the Middle Ages).
When: 10:00 am to 11:00am
How: This is a hands-on class where you will find your size, make a simple pattern, and costruct a close-fitting head covering. Everything you need will be provided.
Fee is $3 per student to cover the cost of class materials.
Skills learned: Basic patterning, sewing machine use (if you want), and hand sewing.
Takeaway: A two-piece linen coif. After class, you’re welcome to stay and finish your coif, or take it home with you to finish. Your pattern, that you can re-use as much as you want.
A useful mini sewing kit to keep in your fight bag.
An instruction sheet.
